Crow: If everyone is human/normal that kind of defeats the purpose of FMA, doesn't it? Then it just becomes some kind of shoujo wank fest. You don't get this as bad in EdWin as you do with slash pairings for some reason. Just goes to show that too many slash fans are indeed twelve-year-olds. It's sad. I -love- mature, dark, well-thought out stories and while it's been my observation that these are more frequent with RoyEd, it's ALSO true that most crap fics have bad yaoi. In a high school AU, you can do a few plots. Hottie meets weirdo, loves them anyway, helps them overcome abuse/being a freak/molestation/whatever. Then there are BAND fics, which I've never understood, seeing as, you know. That's completely fucking random and oh my god why is Ed singing a Ke$ha songROFLMAO. What were you asking questions for? Were you just trying to bake a cake full of rainbows and smiles? THAT IS PROBABLY TRUE BUT SHUT UP. I just--I'm not really familiar with LJ. I don't know how to use it, really. And everyone I know that has an LJ never uses theirs either, so I figure, what's the point? I don't even update it. My idea is that Winry is going to top. I don't know why, but for some reason I HEAVILY DISLIKE Ed topping -anyone- (even if it's a het pairing). Come to think of it maybe that's WHY I dislike him in het pairings... XD I just like him being everyone's bitch. ANYWAY. THAT "AUTHOR" IS A BITCH. ...Maybe after Blue I might start a big, deep genderswitch. I actually have an MPREG (yes, you read that correctly) planned. It's going to be dark and gritty and involve chimeras and Roy's job as Fuhrer making things very difficult on those close to him. MUAHAHA. Because let's face it. Realistically mpreg would be a horror story full of blood and gore and various people having mental breakdowns. <3 GIMME DETAILS ON YOUR ROYED WIPs, WOMAN. *jumps into ongoing convos* LONG POST IS LOOOONG. Dude, RoyEdWin is awesome and you should think it is awesome. Winry and Ed are forever swingers, in my head - I blame fanon! - and Roy is not one to look a gift horse (lol horse) in the mouth. Scenario: Ed is with Winry but has a Thing for Roy, Winry likes to watch, and Roy gets double the sexy blond/es. Everyone wins! (It's much more difficult to pull off in the first animeverse, what with the whole lolwhoops-killed-yer-parents deal, but still.) I approve of this. ffnet is funny. The FMA section is mostly shit and most updates yield nothing worth reading, but occasionally awesome stuff pops up - it just takes a good eye. And yes, I KNOW YOU TOO WELL <3 It must depend on the section. :/ I get a lot of stuff that’s at least readable in the Portal archives, and many that’re very enjoyable. The FMA section has been overrun by Mary-Sues, uninspiring canon writers, mind-numbing AUs, and idiotic, pointless PWPs. Not that I have a problem with PWP, but if you're going to completely butcher the characters and the English language, don't bother. It's no longer hot. It's annoying. ? Is it really that bad? *goes to look* My FMA WIP list: 16 long chapterfics, 7 short chapterfics, 27 oneshots, and 3 collections - one collection with 5 fics, one with 100, and one with 18 and counting. Speaking of KH-shippers: I have not seen SoRiku on dA as often as certain people would have you believe. AkuRoku, however, is everywhere and I am startlingly okay with it. This even if I admit to having read buckets of it in my younger days. [/quote] I've only read a few good high school AUs, and most of the time the author incorporated symbols/characters/backstories to fit in the high school atmosphere. For instance, Ed and Al made some kind of mistake and Al became horrifically ill/died while Ed lost his limbs. Plot's an issue though. The only purpose of high school AUs seems to be putting the characters into been there, done that romantic plots. Sometimes, maybe Hohenheim is beating on Ed, but that's about as far as any actual CONFLICT is concerned. Alchemy schooo~oool… *shot again* …with Ed/Ling or Ed/Roy or a love triangle or threeway *is fed to sharks* Personally I can't stand the "Everyone's Human/Normal!" AU setup. No-alchemy FMA AUs confuse and infuriate me >  I prefer that the character backstories stay as intact as possible, unless changing them is the point of the AU. But high school AU isn't a very dynamic scenario in the first place - it doesn't allow for a lot of plot, like you said. If the point of high school AU is to put the characters in high school, well, there's only so much that can be done in a high school setting xD; This mirrors my feelings perfectly on almost all All Human!AU’s. Honestly, if you’re writing fic for a huge, epic, well-put-together story, why are you watering it down to a high school story you could find for twelve bucks at your school book fair? Put some effort in, man, and pay respect to what the original creator’s put out there. :/ Methinks the key to writing a good high school AU is capturing the spirit of the source material. (shameless plug time…) Me and my brother are working on a little Portal 2 fanfic… it’s a pet project of ours, and it’s kind of like Portal meets Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide (in fact, the title was supposed to be Chell’s Declassified Science Survival Guide…); we have a lot of fun talking it over and cramming in whatever little nods to the game we can. It helps that we can make up dialogue for pretty much any character on the spot, then say it out loud in a fairly accurate voice. xD; It is a high school AU (and middle school too…) but since it’s Portal, you’re obligated to make lots of mad science jokes (first episode: Chell makes friends on her first day at a new school and fights off an army of mantis men…), loads of sarcasm, and the entire setting being too insane to stay open in any reasonable universe; because guidelines and safety regulations are good enough for academic establishments… but not Aperture academic establishments! So the teachers are all characters from other Valve video games, and the only sane members of the faculty are a schizophrenic who talks to a cube and the mute soccer/swimming/basketball/anything-the-other-guy-didn’t-want-to-take coach. We have a lot of fun with that. Don't you tell anyone that Tara is writing EdWin! D: Her slash fans will feel betrayed and her het fans will ask me if I'm finally leaving the dark side! Actually, it's kind of cheating because it's still a slash pairing. XD For some reason, maybe because I'm gay, I don't like writing about heterosexual sex. It doesn't appeal to me. Gay sex? Anyway, I reviewed it, and shortly after the fic was taken down. Too much negative feedback for the author it seems lolololol. 4 UR VIEWING PLEASURE and to hopefully cheer you up, here's what I wrote:

You do realize that people like me keep a mental tally of "fics" like these, and then write more of what you're ranting about just to spite people like you? This is counterproductive and distasteful and I hope that someday you grow up enough to look back on this and cringe.
So you don't like the pairs you're ranting about. Once again, congratufuckinglations, welcome to fandom. The obvious solutions: a) DON'T READ/WRITE THOSE PAIRS and b) READ/WRITE MORE OF PAIRS YOU -DO- LIKE. You will be happier, shippers of the pairs you don't like will be happier, the entire goddamn world will be happier. That simple.

I do hope they understood the TEACHING MOMENT and that the deletion was more than a simple flounce, but the odds of that happening are about as likely as Stephenie Meyer secretly writing Jake/Edward slashfic under a fake name. (re: not impossible, but probably not.)

Thank you so much for the eloquent review you left her. XD I pretty much told anyone who would listen on DeviantART to look at it, including Rueme, so many BAAAAWS were had by all. Mission accomplished? Ugh, God. You should be a teacher. You could verbally abuse your pupils and make it a TEACHING MOMENT.
I mean, I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. I just wish that these anti-yaoi freaks would spend their time, I don't know, writing about the canon pairings they claim to love so much instead of constantly (and poorly) presupposing the characters' positions in thinly disguised vent fics. Am I right?
...Heh. ^-^ I always get freaked out when people are reading my smut.
