(tl;dr and list of the seasons at the bottom)
Okay so I just had to make a thread for the last of my top three fandoms (the other two being, of course, FMA and Animorphs), Digimon! Here we can talk about anything relating to Digimon, but of course, spoilers ahead, so be warned.
So, did you watch it? Did you like it? What did you like about it? What didn't you like about it? What bothered you about the show, what did you find interesting, and how did you get into it? Favorite characters? Favorite 'mon(s)? Do you have any ships? What bothered you with the plot(s) and what do you wish had been expanded on? Did you only recently get back into it? If so, why? If you didn't like it, why do you think you couldn't get into it? What about your favorite season? Favorite episode(s)? Least favorite characters? How has Digimon affected you, if at all?
As a kid, I loved this series, it was one of the several monster shows I watched obsessively, the others being Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Monster Rancher. I can't remember how I got into it exactly, but I suspect it might have been my father (he's the one who got me into most of my monster shows and enabled it by getting me toys, plushies, movies, etc. ...My mom didn't exactly approve ohohoho) taking me to watch the movie (which was just the first three Digimon movies mashed together ('-')) when it came out.
From there it was pure love. I had four of the cassettes (of only five that were released because...Fox hates us?), multiple figures, some plushies, bedsheets (which I still have in storage), pillowcases, a watch, a towel (which I also still have), and who knows what else.
My memories of Digimon resurfaced a few years ago, when Digimon World Dawn and Dusk were still new, and I bought Dusk on impulse at GameStop. I quickly set the game aside though, and forgot about it until this summer. More recently, around July, I found some nice fanart of the show by someone on dA who I occasionally checked in on to look at recent deviations, and became curious. Eventually I decided to start rewatching the series, starting with the first four movies on YouTube. From there I began watching the first season, Adventure, dubbed. The puns were groan-worthy, some of the voices were laughable, and the animation wasn't perfect, but I couldn't help but love it all over again. I genuinely laughed, facepalmed, groaned, and cried while watching Adventure.
One of my favorite things about the show is that, even when the dub tried toning some things down and editing out some more 'mature' things, the show still took the audience seriously. We got some nice character development, with the kids growing up throughout the show, learning from their mistakes, and moving on. The villains were serious threats, and we actually had death! True, Digimon can be reborn, but still. We even got some on-screen tearjerker deaths. Looking back on it now, some of the things the show was able to get away with amazes me.
Of course, like all things it has its share of problems. For one thing, the final big bad, Apocalymon, comes right the fuck out of nowhere. There was no mention of him (at least in the dub. I am unsure of whether or not he was mentioned in the original) until the very end of the third to last episode. Not to mention that his character was completely butchered. It was rather hard to take him seriously with some of his dub lines.
There were also some interesting ideas they dropped. In Adventure, in one of the earlier episodes dark digivolution was introduced, and it was a very interesting concept. But it was dropped after one episode and brought back in...Tamers, I believe. Another dropped concept was the Dagomon subplot from an early episode in Adventure 02. Dagomon seemed like an interesting and threatening villain, but is completely dropped after that one episode.
A few other things could be worth mentioning, but I'll rant later, haha.
Adventure is my favorite season, with, Frontier, Tamers, and Adventure 02 following, in that order. I don't any opinions on Data Squad/Savers or Xros Wars (?) yet, as I haven't watched them. My favorite movies are 'Our War Game,' 'Digimon X-Evolution,' and the first movie, which I think is just 'Digimon Adventure (movie).'
My favorite human from Adventure was, and still is, Tai, but I don't dislike any of the other characters. My favorite mons (characters and just mons in general) are Wizardmon, Gatomon, Terriermon and Lopmon (tied), Agumon, Gabumon, Leomon, Labramon, Gommamon, Biyomon, and Tentomon (this includes their evos), among others. And as always, I'm a pretty big shipper, hee hee. My OTP is definitely Wizard/Gato, but I enjoy many others |D
As for how it affected me, Digimon led to my love of dinosaurs as a kid. When I little Tai and Agumon were my faves, and since Agumon was a cute little yellow dino that turned into a giant orange dinosaur with many, many teeth, who then turned into an even bigger half cyborg dinosaur that could shoot missals, I definitely developed a love for dinosaurs and began building a collection of dinosaur figures. I would then spend many hours watching TV playing with the aforementioned figure, making them fight and kill each other and such. You know, kid stuff.
And I'll wrap things up here. This is getting a bit long, I think. So, you guys, share what you like, don't like, preferred characters, seasons, and ships, and even flesh it out and explain why if you want. I'm a bit rusty when it comes to seasons past 02, just as a warning. I need to fully rewatch Tamers and Frontier, and then watch Savers/Data Squad and Xros Wars. I'll be back later with fanart and icons and stuff.
Also, I don't think I really need to say it since we're all cool and tolerant over here, but please keep things civilized and be respectful, even if you don't agree. Debate is definitely allowed, but no flame wars plzkthnx. But this being the FMAClub I'm sure we've nothing to worry about |D
Also, feel free to post your favorite fan works, including your own fanfiction/fan art. Shameless self promotion is definitely allowed!
tl;dr: Digimon fans (and non-fans) come here and discuss anything Digimon! Likes, dislikes, theories, etc. Just keep it civilized.
Digimon currently has six 'seasons.' In order, they are:
-Adventure, the one that started it all.
-Adventure 02, the sequel to Adventure.
-Tamers, a completely new cast and world.
-Frontier, another new cast and different world.
-Savers (Data Squad), yet another new cast and world.
-And Xros Wars, with another new cast and world.
